Textures and Patterns in Nature

Next class intake late 2024

As feltmakers and textile artists, we love texture and pattern and of course nature is the consumate designer. In this workshop, you will learn how to recreate specific textures/ patterns on your felt surface using photographs as your source documents and nature as your reference point. This sampling class will result in a variety of experimental techniques leading to the creation of very unique surface textures. A sampling class is a relaxed and creative way to learn more about feltmaking. So much information and low stress. You will be encouraged to take your own images as source material for your felt work. This class will help you to access creative ways to create your very own textures and patterns referenced from your own area or places you have visited. You will be given a huge range of techniques to choose from and the skills you will need to make your felt interesting and creative. We will work in flat felt and in 3D.The course will cover tips, tricks and tools, mono-printing, stencilling, dyeing, sculpural work, texture and pattern development techniques and that is just the tip of the iceberg! An introduction to photograpy apps, basic cutting technology, basic dyeing and shibori on felt and fabric. A very personal, nature based felt exploration.

  • Enrollment will open later in the year  and payment plans will be available  I have had huge interest in this class and spaces are limited.

Take your feltmaking skills to the next level. An inspiring workshop using a limited palette of colours. I have discovered that limitations can result in unlimited creative freedom. I have taught this class on three continents and it is always very well received. Participants say they learn so much  from working in black and white. It means that you can work with very few materials which is a bonus for the budget! Not a black and white lover? You can over-dye the pieces later if you like. It is a sampling class like no other. In a sampling class you focus on the process, not the finished product and it takes all the usual working stresses away. Supercharge your creativity!

Wendy has to be one of the best “Educational Facilitators” I have come across. I lectured Vis Arts @ Uni and taught in T.A.F.E. and Adult Ed for many years and there are not many who have the care and patience for their students that Wendy has. Her knowledge of subject was also superb as was her ability to share that.

    Shirley (Vic)

Wendy’s extensive knowledge and experience showed through in her presentation. She was generous with her time to all participants; answering all questions and stopping to help where required. This was reflected in the feedback given by participants at the end of the workshop. All feedback was positive!

Thank you so much for your unstinting willingness to pass on not only your amazing knowledge but your love and enthusiasm for all things felting. You have really been a wonderful inspiration – you put me on track for great felting resources, demonstrated that felting should be a calm and gentle pastime (still working on this) and impressed on me the need for quality felting and maintaining the integrity of our craft (will continue to work hard on this one).

    R. (Qld)

One of Wendy’s very special talents is her ability to impart her knowledge with modesty, patience & good humour across all the skill levels of those who attend her classes. I have been very fortunate to attend several of her classes at The Felt Studio. Wendy Bailye is an amazing human & a born educator. I highly recommend her & The Felt Studio to all who want to have a great workshop experience.

I really want to thank you once more for the fantastic day I spent with you and the other women at the workshop in February. I loved it so much! Thank you for being so passionate about your art and always willing to share this passion with other people. Thanks to you, we have opened our eyes to a beautiful art and, personally, it has enriched my life now that I know some of the secrets behind the art of felt and that I can really appreciate the work behind it too.

    Delphine (Vic)

Thank you so much for the lovely workshop – it was very relaxing and so much fun.  I made 3 more flowers yesterday and am filled with the urge to give a flower to everyone I know!
